Sam Nigro, MSMI
Sam Nigro is a medical illustrator from Yonkers, New York. She received her B.A. from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI and her M.S.M.I. from Augusta University in Augusta, GA. Sam knew she wanted to pursue medical illustration as a career since she experimented with anatomical illustration in high school. She spent her undergraduate years incorporating her education in biology into her work, eventually developing her senior thesis which illustrated the genetic lineages of cancer development.
After earning her bachelor's, Sam went on as a self employed graphic designer and worked in an emergency room for two years prior to starting graduate school. While in the ER, she worked hands on with patients and the attending physicians, transcribing their medical documentation and aiding in patient care. This experience molded her passion for improving communication between medical science and the lay public.
Sam went on to graduate school in Augusta, Georgia where she earned her M.S.M.I. Her experience there was invaluable; there she learned anatomy alongside the medical students in cadaveric dissection, she observed and sketched surgery in the OR, adopted new software in animation and 3D, and finished her degree with her Master's Project. Sam developed a patient education website on Gender Affirmation Hormone Therapy for transgender patients, one of the very first of its kind. This website can be viewed here or through the button at the bottom of the page.
Sam intends to continue bridging communication gaps between scientists, researchers and the lay public in her future career.
